Downtown Grocery News 1/11/2007

Hello Downtown Grocery Shopper,

Happy New Year! We hope your December Holidays were safe and memorable. We've new (and reminder) items to share with you this week:

1. LOCAL SALAD GREENS: Take home Local Organic Mixed Salad Greens, cut fresh weekly, from the greenhouse at Moonshadow Farm --- Greens this week include Russian kale, totsoi (an oriental salad green), mustard greens (they are spicy), chard, and parsley.

2. NEW OPTIONS FROM OUR KITCHEN: We've introduced new and tasty grab-and-go options located behind cooler door #1. These are single-serving tubs with salads, hummus and pesto prepared in our own kitchen. Or take two tubs to complement dinner tonight! Items include:
- chick pea and three herb salad
- roasted corn and black soy bean salad
- red lentil salad with carrots
- pasta (such as bow-tie) salad with mixed vegetables
- spicy black bean dip
- hummus with jalapeno (mild)
- hummus with German Red garlic (garlic from a Merrill grower)
- hummus with roasted red pepper
- hummus with sun-dried tomato
- and pesto with German Red garlic.

3. NEW DAILY MENU: We've introduced new hot entree and soup recipes for our daily lunch menu. These are grab-and-go/self-serve selections to save you time. Log-on to the main page of our website to view the complete menu. Neat items such as:
- Monday, Potato Kugel
- Tuesday, Armenian Stuffed Cabbage & Tomato-Lemon Sauce
- Wednesday, Russian Vegetable Strudel
- Thursday, Gratin of Yams with Apples & Pasta
- Friday, Roasted Jerusalem Artichoke Bake
- Saturday, Pizza with Zucchini, Tomatoes, Mixed Italian Cheeses

4. BELLAVITANO CHEESE HAS ARRIVED: We're pleased to announce that the very popular Bellavitano Sartori Reserve Cheese arrived again last Wednesday! It's super tasty yet mild. Bellavitano is from the same cheese-maker that won the "Best US Cow Cheese" for their Stravecchio Parmesan in June at the World Cheese Awards, London!

5. BREAKFAST TO-GO: Are you looking for a quick hot breakfast? Stop-in every Mon-Sat starting at 8 AM and choose from a hot bowl of oatmeal, corn grits, or breakfast burrito with egg and cheese plus pour a cup of old-fashioned percolator coffee, no acidity --- sourced from a local roaster, Three Willows --- or try a biscotti, an Italian-style cookie, perfect for coffee dipping!

6. CASE-TO-GO PROGRAM: Pre-order a full-case of your favorite store items to be picked-up in about one week. You'll get a discount, too! Find your favorite case with Lynette (stop-in the store or call) on Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 8 AM to 3 PM.

7. THANK YOU! Thank You! thank you!: Our Grand Opening and Open House on Dec 15th/16th was a success! Thanks to those whom found time to talk with our guest vendors! Thanks to our guest vendors:

9. YOUR OPINION? --- We're open to your thoughts, opinions and ideas. We're a social-friendly place sharing food ideas and please share your thoughts with our Grocery Team, our email, or contact Blaine or Kevin at the numbers below. Last year at this time there was no downtown grocery store --- 11 months ago we saw a huge colorful vegetable mural appear on a storefront at 607 Third, six months ago a downtown grocery store opened, today we have the pleasure to share with you fun news about cheese, chick-peas, cases-to-go, and corn grits --- what will happen tomorrow? Share your ideas!

BUY LOCAL: Downtown Grocery may be at the forefront of a new approach to food. Last week State Senator Julie Lassa (D-Stevens Point) unveiled legislation called the "Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin" program. Downtown Grocery was founded on the idea to nurture a local food economy, so we're pleased to see the State working to strengthen local farm to market connections!
