Downtown Grocery News 12/07/2006

Hello Downtown Grocery Shopper,

Maybe winter has arrived! This past week a nice snowfall gave a white "floor" to our new streetscape: a horse and sleigh. An old-time sleigh and corn-stalk horse replace the 120 sunflowers, tomato plants, mint, basil, cabbage (and the other 20 vegetables) that we had planted along Third Street in front of our big storefront!

WHAT'S NEW? We've much to share with you about new items-seating-events-secret codes:

1. PIES baked-in-a-cup: Figgie or Chocolate-Banana --- Figgie Pie is made with our dried figs --- yes, it's true, both pies are baked in a personal-sized paper cup to-go!

2. BARS: Also available Fig Bars --- another tasty use of our dried figs!

3. GREENS: Local & Organic Mixed Salad Greens from the greenhouse at Moonshadow Farm.

4. BREAKFAST to-go is new this week: Stop-in starting at 8 AM Mon-Sat and choose from a hot bowl of oatmeal, breakfast burrito with egg and cheese, and an old-fashioned cup of coffee (percolator coffee to be exact) with a medium body, smooth taste and no acidity --- sourced from Wausau's only local roaster, Three Willows, Schofield.

5. MORE SEATING! We've added two tables with stools by the kitchen to give a place to snack a ready-to-go breakfast or lunch! Of course, as with the rest of the store, the tables are constructed with wood from the forests and sawmills at Moonshadow Farm, designed by Kevin, and constructed by Matt Sanford Craft Carpentry, yay!

6. SPREAD CHEESES in a tub: Do you like to spread cheese on a cracker? We've a variety of Wisconsin spread cheese flavors --- Port Wine, Garlic & Herb, Sharp Cheddar, and Horseradish. Pair that with two new cracker choices, whole wheat squares or classic rounds!

7. GARLIC: Locally-grown organic garlic. They're big, they're firm and they're tasty. Check-out these names: Gourmet German Red Hardneck, Inchelium Red Softneck, Kettle River Giant Softneck and Summit Roja Hardneck. This is serious garlic!

8. NAKED: Arriving on Saturday 12/9, more Naked Brand Juice Smoothies, they've been flying off the shelf and we're nearly empty or maybe naked of Naked.

9. CASE-TO-GO: Also new this week, Our Case-to-go Program! Order a full-case of your favorite store items to be picked-up in about one week. You'll get a discount, too! Talk with a cashier about your favorite case!

10. CHRISTMAS TREES: Have you found your Christmas Tree yet? Moonshadow Farm is the only Wisconsin farm offering organic Christmas trees -- yes, it's true, no pesticides were used or no sprayed colorants were added. In fact, two families from Milwaukee found Blaine's farm on a Google search and drove north this past weekend to buy Christmas trees. Contact Blaine at his phone 675-6588 to meet at the farm and pick-up a fresh-cut tree.

11. BLAINE will be out-of-town until next Wednesday but contact him to schedule a tree pick-up for the weekend of December 16th --- Blaine won't be vacationing the entire seven days, first he's making a delivery of medicinal herbs to Minnesota, then off to St. Cloud to attend the Annual Conference for the Minnesota Fruits & Vegetable Growers Association, then pheasant hunting in South Dakota, finally skiing in Bozeman, Montana. Hope he's not planning Downtown Grocery.com Store #2 on Main Street in downtown Bozeman as we've more ideas for Wausau first!

12. GRAND OPENING: We've a Grand Opening/December Open House planned for December 15th and 16th, Friday and Saturday all-day. We're scheduling food tastings with vendors, planning daily specials, and offering on-the-fly quickie store tours lead by owners, Blaine & Kevin, or our dedicated-determined grocery team of cashiers, cooks and organizers! Stop-in, please, to celebrate the holiday season and our first five months since opening July 5th!

13. MUSIC with the Gilks: Join Susanna and Paul Gilk and their acoustic music for the next three Saturdays 12/9, 12/16, 12/23 from 12 to 2 PM. Their sounds fill our store and compliments our other sensory experiences!

14. SECRET CODE WORD: Mention to a cashier the secret code word "German Red" and receive a coupon for a future purchase!

LOCALLY GROWN ON TV: Last week ABC Nightly News spent several days featuring stories about farming, organics and our food-eating future! One story featured locally grown organic (like much of our store) versus big organic (grown in industrial-style farms) and the advantages for locally grown food. Click-on link below:
