History of Downtown Grocery™
Downtown Grocery™ is located in the former Vullings Floral and Gifts at 607 Third Street. We moved into this storefront retail space starting March 1, 2006. One of the first items on our list before starting the interior reconstruction was to paint a huge mural of vegetables, including a giant pumpkin, on the storefront window. The mural provided a construction privacy screen (though peepholes were available such as in the shiny spot of a huge apple!), a temporary splash of color, and a hint of the excitement soon to arrive on Third Street.
Then we proceeded with the interior demolition, restoration and new construction to convert a flower shop into a 1500 square foot grocery market. We restored the hardwood floor and the original tin ceiling, and painted the original plaster walls with earth tone colors. We added produce coolers, dairy coolers, freezers, wood shelving, cashier stations and our own kitchen called Deliberations (an urban deli).
The result of those efforts is an old-fashioned interior restoration of an historic Wausau storefront to create an Everyday Farm & Grocery Market! Photos from construction: Week One, Week Two and Week Eight:
