Cooking Class:
Flavors of India with a Six-Course Dinner
- When --- Thursday, January 10th, 2008, 7-9:00 PM
- Cost --- $35/person, pay in advance, reserve your seat, 10 person limit.
- What --- Prepare selections to serve a Six-course Dinner with "Flavors of India":
Spiced Lentil Dinner:
1. Date & Orange Chutney
2. Chappatis, a soft flatbread
3. Spiced Lentils
4. Yogurt Sauce called "Raita"
5. Eggplant, Red Pepper and Spinach Curry
6. Spicy Indian Dahl.
- Whom --- Debbie Staehler and Blaine Tornow will prepare selections and pepper the class with the culture and food of India. Debbie is a part-time Chef at Downtown Grocery and Blaine is the co-owner of Downtown Grocery and a devoted foodie. Debbie and Blaine also menu plan all of the prepared food options at Downtown Grocery such as the following customer favorites:
- Spicy Indian Dahl with Red Lentils, Corriander, Cumin, Ginger, Mustard and Garlic
- Seitan Ruebens with Swiss on Rye (Seitan is a wheat-based vegetarian meat substitute)...
...and it has been said by many customers, "This is the best tasting Rueben and I'm not a vegetarian!"
- Rustic Tomato Soup made with huge bread cubes!
Debbie Staehler grew up in food service. Her family owned a supper club near Eau Claire where Debbie was involved in many aspects of the kitchen and customer service. Debbie holds a BS in Dietitics from UW-Stout with a Minor in Sociology. She has 14 years of experience at Sodexho/Marriot serving as the Kichen Manager planning and managing Breakfasts, Lunches and Special Events for 800-1100 people. Debbie has an energetic, warm and social approach in sharing knowledge and ideas about tasty and healthful food! Debbie also co-taught with Blaine a class at Grebe's in 2007 called "Organic Delights."
Blaine Tornow grew up around food, too! His father owned Tornow Grocery store (now the Rib Mountain IGA) and Blaine worked in all departments! Blaine also owns MoonShadow Farm, a MOSA Certified Organic Farm, located west of Wausau. Blaine is a devoted foodie, a vegetarian and attends cooking classes, including a raw vegan weekend class at Ecopolitan in Minneapolis, and a Chinese Cooking Class taught by Wing See at NTC. Blaine also co-taught with Debbie the Organic Delights class at Grebe's in 2007. Blaine has a detailed and energetic approach towards preparing good food!
